home made sporran strap question??

I am planning on making a home made sporran strap using:
dress belt (for reg. pants, not a kilt belt),
2 dog choker chains,
leather punch and hardware.

I have never tried to do anything like this before. I was wondering if anyone would have any tips/tricks of the trade so this dosen't turn out to be a complete disaster! Thank you all for help in advance!

p.s. I will post pic.'s assumeing it turns out ok.

Make sure you take the chains off of the dog first.

I'd say just use the dress belt as a leather sporran strap, the chains can catch on the kilt and snag it, not a pleasant thing at all.

The dog chain should have welded and polished links to keep the dog from being snagged, so you're probably OK on that.

The leather dress belt might bee too thick to fold around the connecting ring to the chain.

On all my chain straps there is a thin, single sided leather strap and buckle at the back. The chain is on a poindted D-ring, and the leather is folded over this ring and rivited back on itself.

I'm not sure that you will be able to do that with the dress belt because they are usually three pieces thick and don't fold well. Sometimes they just have cardboard-like stiffener in the middle. If that's the case, you might be better off just using chain all the way around if chain is what you need. If the dress belt is long enough, then you can use it as a dress down strap option.
