online tartan identifier
Okay, I apologize up front, I know it's been mentioned many times here, but searching for "online tartan identifier" yields no results.
Anywho, I know there's a tartan identifier online where you search by primary color and such. Any help there?

Not quite what I was looking for, thanks for the input though.
I realize I wasn't very clear. With this one, as I recall, you choose the most dominant color in the tartan, then choose other colors in it, and it gives a list of the most likely candidates.

If you go to Scotweb Kilt Store ( XMarks advertiser--upper right-hand corner) and click on "Tartan and Fabric Finder" in the left margin, they have a search engine that is set up like that.
Hope this helps.

bjproc,
This looks great!
But--I run a search and it gives me a list of possible matches. When I then select a tartan from the list, it seems to almost (but not) always, show me a totally different tartan...at least it is named something else, I have not cross-referenced it to see if the pattern itself is correct. Do you have this experience?

OK, thanks, I will just put it down as one of those mysteries of life I will never understand...they usually involve some sort of electronics...
If anyone is able to tame this search engine, please let us know...

Moosedog,
I find it a nice tool. I think it is very general and does not get into the shades of all the colors. Hues and tints can change the tartan significantly. I bet the search engine might find all rgb in any order and doesn't necessarly search by order. Just a thought, havn't confirmed it.
