Advice on material for a Cargo Freedom Kilt

    Dear all:

I own quite a few kilts (about a dozen or so) and two of them are a Tartan model and a casual model from Steve at Freedom Kilts.

I want to get another kilt from him that I can wear casualy on my jeans waist (not traditionally on the true waist). I want this kilt for festivals, hiking and such. It'll be a Cargo model.

I want a material that will feel similar to the feel of the Amirikilt I own which is 100% cotton, but I don't want to deal with ironing it so much. Can any of you advice if the work weight cotton would be better for keeping creases than the winter weight or even summer weight cotton variety? Or would you recommend using the blend of poly/cotton? Would the poly/cotton make the kilt look too dressy, stiff?

    Thanks,

    Sephy

Agreed. There is no 100% cotton that won't run you crazy with wrinkles. The 50/50 or 60/40 poly/cotton blends are great. I use these blends for all my hiking kilts, as does Steve, and they work well.

The winter weight cotton is VERY heavy and so worthy of its name. It does hold the pleats well but this is probably more due to the fact that Steve sews them in. After a few washings, they do tend to curl if not ironed. Not a problem for me but.... If you are looking for something more akin to the AK, I would suggest that you go with the poly/cotton blend. Talk with Steve and tell him what you expect of the kilt and you WILL get what you want.

Here's a shot of my winter weight worn at "jeans waist".
