    Attire for Tent Conveners

I figure we've talked about formal and evening attire to an exhaustive point. I thought I would switch gears to another style. For those of you who convene a clan tent at highland games, what do you wear? I myself have a white uniform shirt with the Barclay badge embroidered on it and my hunting Barclay kilt. I try to wear comfortable shoes as I'm usually on my feet the whole day. I also dress for warmer weather due to the games I work being held in the heat of the summer.

Does anyone wear a complete daywear outfit (waistcoat and jacket) while hosting a clan tent? Or do you feel that because you are representing your clan that you feel that you need to wear as much clan "stuff" as possible. Doesd anyone's clan require them to wear certain items while working a tent? That last one is a bit of a stretch, but I was just wandering.

Here is a picture of me and Bill Graham, at my clan tent at last years Fergus Highland Games, I dressed in the day wear outfit as we were going to do the march of the clans, unfortunately the rain came in and the march was canceled. Now I was not at the tent all day, though after the conditions we had I would have been comfortable in what I wore.

Here is the MacNaughton tent the same day

My standard kit for working our clan tent is a khaki "safari"/walking-out shirt from L.L. Bean, khaki hose, balmoral with clansman's badge and my Freelander sporran. Shoes are generally an Oxford style low-quarter a la Timberland/Eastland/Doc Martin's.

If the weather forecast is calling for rain or chilly temperatures, I'll throw my Barbour wax jacket in, as it presents a nice "Highland" look to it with the kilt.

I generally try to shy away from too much "clan" items -- the badge on my bonnet is enough for me. I have worn my polo shirt with the old Royal Hong Kong Police emblem (a gift from a former RHKP constable) at the games in the past.

And, if you'll promise not to tell...I have been known to wear a ball cap from time-to-time, a khaki one with the emblem of the Iowa Scottish Pipes & Drums.

    Regards,

    Todd

I wear a kilt, shoes (without kilt hose- given the heat of summer, wool socks are not good!) and whatever shirt I darned well please. Usually it's my Jacobite shirt- the material breathes really well. So there you go.

I didn't think of adding pics. The first is my usual attire

This was last November, I thought it was going to be cooler than it actually turned out to be. I wore more of a daywear outfit with a pullover vest and tie.

If you are wearing your clan tartan that should be a sufficient minimumof clan stuff. At most I wear a clan badge on my headgear in addition. Kilt hose, sgian dubh, comfortable but smart-looking torso wear appropriate for the weather. I think a pragmatic scotsman would not wear a wool day jacket in hot weather, just becasue it is "standard highland attire".

You would think that would be true, especially in the southeastern US. But at the Glasgow KY games, held at the end of May or first of June, there is quite a contingent of dignitaries that dress in the finest daywear outfits. Among them is Romily Squire, a fine heraldric artist. Here is a photo from a couple of years ago.
