    Kenyan Kilt

    Ok - its official - I'm insane!

It started out as a joke to myself... then a bit of digging, a phone call to my mum and then too many evenings stitching.... I've made another kilt.

This one is a bit differnt, with its own set of challenges and lateral thinking.

Background - some of you know I like rugby. Next weekend is the final the International Rugby Boards 7's World Series. Its being played in Edinburgh and I go each year. Now - this is the second year I'm taking my dad with me. My dad is Scottish and a huge fan of Kenya. He's been going there on holiday for 10 years, would like to live there and has learn swahili! So a serious Kenyan Fan. Kenya also have a decent 7s Rugby squad - as 7s is all about speed and agility and Kenyans are very good at that!

Having had a good look round the forum I saw discussion about the Maasia Tartan and it all just clicked - easier said than done!

So I thought it'd be fun to make a kilt for Dad out of a Kenyan Shuka. (this is the material - although my mum had one in the cupboard bought in Nairobi - http://www.ainamoja.com/catalog/clot...s/ClMbrbw2.htm )

I had two main problems - one its REALLY lightweight, two its only 4 yards long. So I had to make the under apron another 10" longer with some canvas and black lining - no one will see it but I wanted to preserve the depth of pleat and I didnt have many pleats due to the length of fabric... also its not desiigned for me to wear so hopefully it'll sit better on dad than me...

Still I've had a go - finished it tonight and I'm pleased with it for the most part - this is only my second go at making a kilt...

Designed for fun and to wear to the rugby - it'll be unique, something for the Kenyans at the tournament to laugh at and I'm sure Dad'll appreciate the thought.

Excuse the nasty orange pictures - its not come out well with the flash - will get some more when I can get some natural light or with Dad wearing it at the rugby...

I think this is a nicer pic of it....
