Pre-Culloden 'MacDonnell of Keppoch' image/thead-count sought
I was reading Matthew's article about Pre-Culloden tartans, here, and he remarked on the MacDonnell (MacDonald) of Keppoch thusly:
"A MacDonnell of Keppoch tartan (though not the one normally seen today) was copied from a relic of 'the '45' that was given by Keppoch to Prince Charles Edward. "
My question is 'Does anybody have an image or thread-count of this not normally seen tartan'? I'm curious how different it might be... I know that ScotWeb's database has two different materials available... I'm wondering if either of these is the design that Mr. Newsome was referring to...

Ok here is what I found at the Register:

I think this is the one your looking for...I could be wrong though. this was taken from Alexander XVI who was killed at Culloden and a piece of the tartan allegedly given to Prince Charles. (according to Scottish Tartans Register)
Here is the thread count and color pallet:
Threadcount: B2 R8 HG24 R6 B12 A2 R48 B2 R4 HG4
Pallet: A=5C8CA8AZURE;B=2C2C80BLUE;HG=285800HUNTING GREEN;R=C80000RED;
Anyone else find anything different?
I have always tempered my killing with respect for the game pursued. I see the animal not only as a target but as a living creature with more freedom than I will ever have. I take that life if I can, with regret as well as joy, and with the sure knowledge that nature's ways of fang and claw or exposure and starvation are a far crueler fate than I bestow. - Fred Bear

That's more than I've ever been able to find! Wow, thanks; but who is 'Alexander XVI'? (forgive me, it doesn't ring any bells), I presume he was a Chief of Keppoch (without resorting to wiki or other sources)?

I also got this one as well. The Register says the source is portrait/artefact.

Here is the thread count and color pallet:
Threadcount: G4 R8 G2 R64 W2 B16 R8 G56 R2 B2 R12
Pallet: G=005020MOD GREEN;R=DC0000RED;W=E0E0E0WHITE;B=2C4084BLUE;
I hope this helps.

Oooh, this one's an asymetrical tartan... Now I'm wondering just how many versions of MacDonald/MacDonell/MacDonnell of Keppoch are in the registry... We could use some help in thinning the field, it seems.

Since part of my linage is Macdonald of Keppoch, I once posted a query about this same tartan.
To answer your question see my original thread at:

I have pictures posted of the various Macdonald/MacDonnell of Keppoch tartans posted there, but hurry, the host for the pics (geocities) announced they are closing their free web services October 4th, 2009; thus all images I've posted prior to today will be gone!

Another thought. I have a 16 ounce Macdonald of Kingsburgh (pre-Culloden) tartan kilt. Cloth is from D.C. Dalgliesh.
If Dalgliesh has one pre-Culloden tartan they may have others.
Can't hurt to ask.

Thanks River'! I've already put in an (unrelated) inquiry to D.C. Dalgleish (with no response thus far); but, perhaps persistence is the key... I'll try them again.
Nice shot, too! The 10-hole oilskin Doc's round out the look... Is that the Grand Canyon in the background, or someplace else?

Vermillion Cliffs in the background, House Rock Valley below. A scenic overlook on 89A coming down off the Kaibab Plateau. Near Marble Canyon and the North Rim of the Grand Canyon.
And...them boots be Wolverines...just to give them fair credit...easily as heavy as Docs though...
