Those loops of ribbon on the sides.....

......So are they to keep the sporran strap in place, or for the belt? Some have "proper" loops at the back as well.

I use them for that myself, but I didn't think that it was their main purpose.

Loops on kilts are for the sporran strap. If they are used for more, they will put undue stress on the pleats.

Do you mean the loops on the inside of the kilt? Those are for hanging it from a hanger.

The belt loops made of tartan sewn to the back of some kilts are for sporran straps, although I routinely see people put a kilt belt through them. The small loops of ribbon sewn into the waist band can be used for hanging the kilt on a hanger with the appropriate hooks.

Didn't somebody recently post that their kilt had either buttons or loops on the inside to attach to their formal doublet? That might be what your loops are. But, as has already been posted, the loops on the outside of the kilt are for your sporran strap.
