Buchanan Blue Dress Tartan?
I'm wondering about the function of this tartan. Most examples I've seen have been worn by women and girls participating in dancing competitions. Is it designed for that specifically (through either activity or gender) or is it more adaptable? If so, how formal or casual would the accompanying attire be?

This is one of a number of such designs produced by Hugh MacPherson (Edinburgh) in the 1970s and intended as patterns for dancers. This is basically a variation of the Vestiarium design given as Buchanan.
Like any tartan it's as adaptable as you want it to be although these white based setts are now generally out of fashion for general male attire.
