I started with 1 cotton poly 'low end' kilt and 1 Amerikilt at the same time.
After several more low end kilts, I started to make my own and sell some.
I have, as Ron would say, "Different horses for Different Courses". I have 8 yard wool kilts which I wear formally AND casually. I have 5 yarders that I wear casually (and occasionally formally). I have a few PV kilts that I wear casually and a couple Utilikilts, R Kilts, Freedom Kilts, etc that I wear for mowing the lawn, working, etc.
I wear them all. I have my favorite tartans that get more wear than others, but I currently have 46 kilts and cycle through them pretty regularly.

I started with a 13 oz wool 8 yard, pleated to the sett, then another the same but from a different weaver, then a 16oz wool 8 yard pleated to the stripe, two more of the same but pleated to the sett and only yesterday took delivery of 16oz wool IOS pleated to the horizontal. I have one of Matt's Box pleated on order. I also have one WPG military style kilt. I wear them all but think that the IOS will get a thrashing in the near future, because it's new

Started with a trad kilt in the NovaScotia tartan, then I got my family tartan (Modern Lindsay). After that one, I was really into getting a UK (this is in 2001 approx) but by then the funds were getting low. A few years back, I sold my NovaScotia kilt on ebay,( yeah I know, not smart... it was too short by half an inch....) Since then, I joined this forum, and I've been kicking myself about that sale.... and now I am concentrating on accessories.... But with a few other kilts in line...

Although my first purchase, a PV casual is due shortly, my first exposure to the kilt was with an 8 yard Black Watch Regimental. As such it has tainted my desires and I keep dreaming of wool kilts.

See the poll! There are only ten options, and I can think of at least three more that should be in there, so do your best!
My first kilt was a Stillwater Standard. My second kilt was a USA Kilts Casual. My third kilt, I made, it was a canvas casual. I currently have nine kilts, got two in the hopper.
My "budget" kilts are really pretty nice, lightweight poly/wool blends or polyester-viscose. Got three of those. I have two contemporary non-tartan kilts that I made, and there are two of those. The others are higher-quality wool. My one upcoming purchase and the kilt currently in the "make it box" at home would qualify as first-class wool tartan.
So I started with budget tartan, and I'm ending up with a mix of everything....which is sort of one of the poll options!! and I flubbed the poll! Options 3, 5 are the same. DARN it. How'd that happen? Can I edit the poll?

I started out with a nice tartan tank from Geoffrey (tailor) then acquired two SWK standards. In the process of selling the two SWK's and trying to save for a couple more wool kilts. I want a nice Black Watch in box pleat, and would love an IOS in either box or knife pleat. It may be a while, though. Meanwhile, I never wear the PV kilts and much prefer the tailoring of a good wool kilt, though I will admit that the PV's are more tolerable in the heat of summer around here.

Started out with a 9 yard 13oz in my family tartan (Forrester) followed by two machine sewn 16oz 8yd wool tanks two months later, and another 2 months after that. Collection now up to 14, all 13 or 16 oz wool 8-9 yards, except for one 5 yd casual 16oz wool, one 8yd PV, and a 6 yd wool Kingussie. One more 16 oz tank in jones status right now. Slowing down on the acquisitions as my tastes refine a bit.

I started out with a cheap rubbish kilt from ebay (ended up cut up into cloths) then orderd a Tank in my (cooper) tartan while waiting for that got a uk. I now have 2 UK's 2 SWK's one thrifty one heavy a Union kilt my tank from mccalls in Elgin and a suit from TFCK which still has its baisting stitches in so im definatly going towards more higher quality traditional kilts but i still use my UK's and Union kilts a fair bit

I started with a regimental kilt issued to me, and never look back after that! I've got high end wool, low end wool, poly acrylic types, and some very fine contemporaries from the Wizard.
I've seen trends go in different directions, and with that people views on kilts and thier meanings go in equally different directions.
