    18 century style patch knife

Next knife from the wonderful rack I came into possession of! This is an 18th century Ghurka styled patch knife based on these:

    Here's mine:

I was asked to make this one very rustic looking, so all I did was cut and sand the antler. Overall, I like it. I think it came out nice!

What, are you becoming some kind of craftsman, Nighthawk? Be careful or you might amount to something.

Na, glad you're able to do this kind of work, Hawk.
I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…

I'm working at it. Being unemployed has allowed me a lot of freedom to practice my hobbies. My friend for whom I made this knife is an excellent leather worker. I'm going to be apprenticing with him for a few weeks. I want to be able to make more than just the plain and simple sheaths.

I delivered this little beauty to my buddy (who has some work posted at http://www.fjellborg.org/Farmans_gallery.htm if anyone is interested.) He was pretty pleased! I got my first lesson in leather carving. It went well, except that my thumb is a little messed up from a kick I blocked in karate class Monday night. So moving the beveler around made my thumb a little sore. Otherwise I really enjoyed what he was showing me! I carved an oak leaf. Tomorrow I'll be finishing it and (I hope!) staining it!

Cool, Hawk. I have never been able to carv leather, including cutting out pieces; though I have awled and stitched together things other people have cut out.

I hate it when someone pushes their thumb into your thumb nail down near the cutical and makes you beg for mercy...
