Red vest?
Ok so, I am thinking of pairing a red vest, with the Davidson tartan (pictured in my avatar) I think it will look wonderful, my only question is hose...I have a dark blue pair, with you go with the dark blue, or would you go bold with red....

Only if the red matched the red of the vest. Red goes all the way from orange to purple and not all match each other. It is not as glaring with blues and greens. I would go with green hose and red flashes - if I could.

I do have red flashes and was accenting the blue in the tartan with the hose.

Maybe a Navy vest would be a better choice.

You could also consider a tattersall vest or a paisley vest. It would be a more complex judgment getting both the colors in the tattersall and the spacing of the lines in the tattersall such that they would complement and not clash, but it could be a very sophisticated and pleasing effect.
Here is an example:

I believe that the Andover Shop in Boston sells them, but their website is currently down for revising, so I couldn't verify that. Their website is here: http://www.theandovershop.com/
Likewise, a paisley vest could work very well, as long as care was taken to complement and not clash. Some paisley vests are tone on tone, where it is the texture, rather than color that creates the paisley pattern, and so would avoid any potential color/tone/pattern clashes...Paisley vests, like everything else, comes in many flavors, from outlandishly loud to quite subtle in effect. Here are some examples:

"Before two notes of the theme were played, Colin knew it was Patrick Mor MacCrimmon's 'Lament for the Children'...Sad seven times--ah, Patrick MacCrimmon of the seven dead sons....'It's a hard tune, that', said old Angus. Hard on the piper; hard on them all; hard on the world." Butcher's Broom, by Neil Gunn, 1994 Walker & Co, NY, p. 397-8.

I had thought of a red paisley vest as well, have have seen some combos with ties for sale. I would have to make sure it were to match the red in the Tartan, and try on a few diferent colors in hose to try to contrast all the other colors as well, i think I may be leaning more toward the bottle green hose with red flashes (as Chas said) if I do go with the Red vest. I think it would be a nice contrast. Lots to ponder, I will post a picture of what i decide to go with once i get it all together.
On a side note, if I do go with Red Paisley vest, Davidson Tartan, Bottle Green hose with Red flashes, I think that would make a very nice Christmas outfit.

Thanks, Josh,
By the way, I'll bet some diced hose would look good with that Davidson kilt.

Red, or may also be termed as scarlet, tartan red, or brick red, is a superb choice for a waistcoat to be worn with the kilt, however, I tend to restrict this colour for evening or formal occasions. I currently own a 3-button waistcoat made of scarlet worsted wool, to be worn with my regulation doublet for the evening. With regards to the evening, tartan hose in the Clan Dhai sett would be most appropriate, just as cath dath, or red and white/red and black diced hose would work just as well. For day wear, solid red hose perhaps with some sort of dicing on the turnover would look quite smart. I suggest the Bowmore hose from The House of Cheviot, in brick red. Cheers!

Acquired this from eBay, earlier this year. £5 plus £3 postage. Four pockets and six gilt buttons, the seller said that the fabric is 'Melton'. It is like a very thick felt.
