    Smile Functional Sgians

I like sharp, functional knives and usually have a suitable sgian when kilted or a small, folding pocket knife when p@nted. Not as weapons per se, but rather as tools.

When I went to Hong Kong for a year on exchange, a bunch of my kilt gear went missing in the move. I used to have a Colt burl wood sgian, which had a decent edge and full tang construction. It was perfect for day wear and looked like this one (image borrowed a fellow Xmarker):

I'm thinking of getting another Colt or, for around the same price ($20ish on eBay), a Cold Steel Secret Edge:

Recently, however, I came across this interesting adaptation of the traditional sgian by Artificum Solis Bladeworks. It's not too expensive at $87, though still a bit out of my price range...

Who else owns or has their eyes on a functional day wear sgian to tempt me with? Pictures please!

I am waiting for a damascus blade that I will fit a deer antler handle. The handle will be smooth like a baby's behind.
It will be a while before my first attempt at adding pictures.

I have the one in the link below, it's simple, functional, sharp and a nice price. I do not have the studded sheath though.

I'm not up for DIY on this one myself, but I'd love to see yours when it is done!

I notice the handle has a rather unique, curved shape (as per this eBay auction, where I pulled the images below). Is that supposed to mould to your calf? How does it feel in the hose and in the hand?

Colin, that is one sharp sgian (pardon the pun)!

I think the curvature is purely stylistic but it looks pretty snazzy. I like simpler-styled stuff like this for daywear (though I don't wear a sgian).

For day wear I use the Secret Edge. It is a handy, stout, affordable blade. It holds an edge well, too.

I have a secret edge, too. It's not much to look at, but is a heckuva knife.

Very smart! Is this a James Young (Comrie Crafts, Perthshire) creation, I wonder? He's my go-to sgian dubh maker...absolutely love his work.

Why yes it is. I just saw your link!

    Well done,
