    Masters

I recently discovered my wife's mothers family trace back to the Scottish lowlands with the name Masters. Does anyone know how I can trace further? Thanks for any help you can give.

    ancestryology dot com, etc

I can't tell from your post how recently your wife's family is said to have come from Scotland, but knowing that will help a great deal. Knowing the full name of some ancestor is also going to help. Once you have those tools, you can search on several different genealogical sites at no cost, at least at first. Just for fun, you might try googling the ancestor, if you have their entire name. If you feel completely lost, you might consult a professional genealogist, who can do wonders, for a fee. Lastly, this sounds like a good excuse to visit Scotland. Any document you might have will be useful- military discharge papers, census listings, old deeds, family bibles, baptism records, birth and marriage certificates, it is all useful.

According to "Scots Kith and Kin" (revised 2nd edition).
    Masters....Same as MacMasters
MacMasters...MacInnes, Buchanan, which means there are people named Master/MacMaster in both the MacInnis and Buchanan clans. The Mac Innis territory is near the Sound of Mull in Western Scotland and the Buchanans are a little more SE, on the east side of Loch Lomond according to the map which in the book. Neither are low lands areas, but it wasn't unusual for folks to move south for jobs. Hope this helps. Now you just have to figure out which Clan she is related to (or the way we do things here is which has a better looking tartan. LOL)
