Antique Sporran Prices

Bonhams Auction House - http://www.bonhams.com/locations/EDI/ - in Edinburgh sold a number of sporrans yesterday.

This one http://www.bonhams.com/auctions/21870/lot/285/ sold for £1375 ($2300) and this one http://www.bonhams.com/auctions/21870/lot/286/ for £2250 ($3786). Conspicuous consumption as Thorstein Veblen said.

They are expensive but the ones made of silver would also be extremely expensive if they were made today. I got a kick out of the one with the acorn/oak leaves.

The acorn theme reminds me of the Duke of Argyll and his salmon theme silver buttons.

Wow! While it's a bit over the top (at least for me personally) with the Oak & Acorn theme, it is an absolute work of art.
I'm always amazed when things like this come up for auction. I cannot imagine selling a family heirloom like this off.
It was obviously specially commissioned, and CLEARLY very expensive. I'd love to know the personal history of the piece.

Too right! There's a reason work like this is rare today. The man-hours required to make something like this... it's just gorgeous.
