    Good day all,

Didn't want to hijack Artificer's thread.

Here is what I'm offering up for the snakeskin sporran aka #14. Didn't turn out as well as I had hoped, not the design, that was done by ShaunMaxwell on another thread. Just little mistakes of my own. Not as happy on how my filework turned out, etc.

Here it is, using ironwood burl as requested, sealing it with carnuba wax. I added mosaic pins. As they slowly tarnish they will be hard to make out at a distance but will be a subtle addition up close without distracting from the grain -

This is most well done. Excellent work on both sides of this trade gentlemen. It has been fun to watch this one come together so well.

That is a beautiful piece of craftsmanship! Congratulations to both you and Artificer. I've enjoyed following the threads of boths sides of the barter. Seeing the finished product makes me want to have one of my own made! Thanks for sharing.

(Edit: Drac is being generous when he says this is my design... It's actually a simplified version of his original trade sgian http://www.xmarksthescot.com/forum/f...h-trade-59006/ which I loved. I kind of dumbed down the handle and changed the shape of the blade a bit, but for all intents and purposes, it's a Drac.)

Drac, since you aren't happy with the outcome I'd be happy to take it off your hands so that you don't have to look at it any more. :hide:

Without sounding too impolite... Get stuffed, it's MINE! and it's GORGEOUS!:lol:

IMO: one sure sign of a real artist is that he's never truly happy with his work. He sees every micro-fault, every "what I could have done better", every "maybe next time". It's a self-torment. Luckily, it's also what fuels greater self-achievement. Not that it helps the individuals state of mind, or their temperance...

I can't wait to get my giant (much abused) mitts on this beauty.
Thank you again, Drac, for such a great trade. I hope the sporran brings as much joy (and envy from others ) as this sgian will.

    Sgian Dubh is fantastic.

Thanks all. It will cuts things and looks good to a casual look but there will be more to work on for the next one. Also the sheath didn't make it. Cut to much out of the middle and when I was shaping holes appeared in the side.

Real bummer since that wood runs $40+ for a set of scales

The blade made it in the mail yesterday so it should be passing the sporran in transit.

I'm looking forward to seeing the sporran in person soon.

I got a couple more commisions to work on and a couple more coming in. I even got one or two planned that have no plans:D

I really like it. As for defects, they don't look too vital and only add to its charm.

Quoted for TRUTH! This is THE mark of a True Craftsman, even those who know what to look for see no flaws but he knows they are there and he vows to do better next time.

Yessir. I drive myself nuts with that... I made a sporran for Biblemonkey, and he loved it. I, however, hated the fact that there out-of-place stitches... :wall: That knife is lovely! I am very envious, and would love to exchange a flawed sporran for a flawed sgain dubh like that!

Ah! Drac's little beauty was delivered to me in this afternoon's post.

I am now completely convinced the man is a true artist. Any 'flaws' he may be able to perceive are well beyond my ability to spot them, and I'm pretty picky myself

The graining of the wood is gorgeous and the mosaic pins a wonderful surprise. The weight of the knife is just about perfect, heavy enough for you to know it's there, light enough for it to not be an issue. A VERY nice edge makes this little gem not only beautiful but functional.

As I type, a prototype wet-moulded sheath is drying for it.

Pictures on my lovely new acquisition will hopefully follow tomorrow.

    You and me both, 'Hawk!

I remember spending hours on a pen & ink drawing, "messing up" (only I could see it), and unceremoniously tossing it in the garbage. A short moment later I'd see one of my friends digging it out. I'd ask "what are you doing?"
They thought it was great, but I wasn't happy, I still thought it belonged in the garbage!

We are our own worst critics.

(it's a beautiful sgian dubh by the way!)

That is only true if we are experienced enough to KNOW what we are doing, honest with ourselves, and care deeply about the craft.

And it is a beautiful Sgian!!!!!
