I would suggest you have him make his own!!

Pick up one of these at a craft or fabric store (Joanns or Michaels - check circulars as they always have 40-50% off one item)

I also saw some books on making knitted hose (including cabling). I bought wool yarn in green, navy, red, and black. Guess what I'm going to be doing today.

My wife also has a little gadget for making the tassels.

I had a link to it in another thread, but it appears the one she has isn't there any more.

Also a spool knitter. You could actually make one from a large wooden spool, if you can find such a thing

and some finishing nails. I tried a couple of versions from the craft stores, and we like the Wonder Knitter with the 6-peg head for a tubular garter.
