    Knitted Garter Ties - Length?

I saw a thread a while back about knitted garter ties. I was thinking I might kindly ask my wife to make some for me. Anybody know how long they need to be?

The traditional ties I purchased at the Scottish Tartan Museum are 36" long, but I do know that longer ones are made for those with large calves. The link below is to the page on their site where both the standard and longer ties are described.

Definately go longer, I made the mistake of going to short. Made some nice flashes myself, won't make that mistake again.

Twice the circumference of your leg at the top of the hose, plus enough to hang down below the cuff. Consider too the length of the fringe. You may want more or less of it in relation to the amount you reveal below the cuff.

    Rex.

Actually, I would DO THIS = take a pc of RIBBON,
    1. Wrap it & tie it as you wish ( note this discussion )http://www.xmarksthescot.com/forum/d...729/index.html ) Be sure to figure how much of the garter you want showing including the fringe ( note some only like basically the fringe to show. I like part of the garter to show also, especially on my more "fancy garters" (1'-1 1/2" =fringe )
    2. This then becomes your "pattern"

    Remember that knitted garters stretch!!
So account for that as well. You'll want it to go around twice plus the extra length that sticks out.

    Here goes:
With a small size yarn, (such as fingering or sock weight), and a US size 2 or 3 double-pointed needle, cast on 1 1/4" worth of stitches. With a second DPN, knit those stitches, but don't slip them off the first needle. You now have two needles, with the original number of stitches on each. With a third DPN, begin knitting in the round over these two needles. You're making a long tube, or "snake". (It might be easier to divide these stitches onto 3 needles, and knit them with a fourth one.)
When you've reached the desired length, work a two-needle bind-off -or- use Kitchener (grafting) stitch to close up the end. If you want fringe, use a crochet hook to pull a loop of yarn through an end stitch, pass the ends of this piece of yarn through the loop, and pull to tighten. Repeat for as many fringes as you want.

In other words, you're making a very long, very skinny tubular scarf.
    I hope this helps.

And welcome aboard, by the way, from western North Carolina, the greatest place on Earth!

What some of us less talented members use is a Wonder Knitter. It is a modern version of what used to be called knitting nancies. I use a class 6 wool, very heavy. Instead of measuring, I count stitches, 375 for a large set and 325 for small. A large pair of ties will fit a 16" to 19" calf, the small works for 13" to 15". Once you've tried a few, adjust as needed.
