My wife thinks they're just goofy-looking. I wear my tweed balmorals with trousers during cold-weather months. I tried a glengarry, but it didn't suit me.

I believe that. In some ways it's a legitimate qualm (I said in SOME ways...) I've also sometimes looked at what I was wearing or others (not necessarily kilts, but could be anything not mainstream) and felt that it looked rather odd or off, or even goofy.

But that's nothing new. It's almost like repeating a word over and over to yourself until it starts to sound strange. Even everyday clothing items can be really goofy-looking under the right circumstances.

My understanding of what the Japanese thought when they first saw Western men wearing "formal" clothes, with all their tall hats, and collars, and decorations, and embellishments, was that they looked absolutely ridiculous!

But on that note, we must also be willing to laugh at ourselves, shrug our shoulders and say, "Meh. There's worse things in life than looking goofy." And going on with our day.

If you need a perspective check, just one day assemble the absolutely, hands-down, goofiest, most ridiculous getup you can out of your closet, put it on, and tell your wife you're going out. After she screams in horror and you scrape her off the ceiling, and says "there's no way on EARTH you're going out wearing THAT!" You replace your attire with a simple kilt, matching shirt, nice hose, and you (and your wife) will realize just how good you actually look.
