As the first female posting on this, I'm going to add my 2cents.
A kilt is, first and foremost, a man's garment. It is cut for the male hips, which are slim and narrow compaired to a woman's, which must be rounded and wide. A kilt doesn't fit a women's hips well, hence it doesn't lay right. Women have the option in the kilted skirt, which is made for our hips, why wear a man's kilt? Now, if she want's a kilt, no one would stop her. If I would see her, I'd just go my merry way wondering why she was wearing a man's garment.
But, it's a free country, wear what you want.
