The whole thing was based on some historical and anthropological material so it was quite believable if contrived. These legends sound very much like ones that REH used to cook up his worlds.

I have an Early story of his somewhere about the early Picts and the dark diminuative race they encounterd when they moved into England/ Scotland. I'll have to see if I can find it. { I never did find that Star Trek article.}
