I think utilikilt pushes for the change a lit and are clearly masculine and at the same time they are a far removed from traditional Scottish style as you can get and still use the name Kilt successfully. I think they do the best push for MUG's to be accepted. Obviously crossdressers to the worst harm to MUG's being accepted in the culture.

Basically, you're right on about ignorance. Most people simply don't know, and are forced to confront their ignorance. Some choose a simple question, like "Where did you get that?" or "Is that your family tartan?" while others are curious "What do you wear underneath?" Others simply see it as different and assume that it must therefore be bad.
I wore mine to a formal event last weekend and found it strange that other people felt obliged to tell me about their own family heritage--such as "I'm Dutch!" or "I'm French!" While I do have distant Scottish roots, its not why I wear the kilt. I wear it because I like it. If you have a problem with it, that's YOUR problem, not mine.

I don't see that as strange at all; for most educated people who know something about it, the kilt is ethnic dress. This happens to me on a fairly regular basis -- folks will come up and start a conversation about genealogy and their ethnic background. I've had some very interesting and pleasant coversations this way.

The few negative remarks I've gotten are fairly equally split between the UKs and the tartan kilts. All have come from the late teen/early 20s wannabe thug willfully ignorant types. I get a few wide eyed looks from the Mexicans here in San Antonio but no remarks. I've worn tanks to several churches and the preachers all liked them and most people seem to appreciate them and have gotten many nice kilt remarks in church. As for the internet searches, I believe most stuff about as far as I can throw my truck. So, ignore the crazies on the net and cruise by the willfully ignorant as if they don't exist.

We can't do much about the ignorance. If we keep wearing them, then they will learn...eventually.
I think the stupid questions come free with the kilt

You can't rationalize irrational people.
In the middle of all this, did you notice somebody has a wife arguing about the kilt she wants him to buy himself? After all the posts about getting wives to appreciate kilts: Ha, brilliant.

I either (1), choose to learn more about the subject, therefore becoming "un-ignorant", or (2), accept what it is at face value and move on with my life because I just don't care, knowing that even if I did want to learn more, I would probably be worse off because of it.
The problem I have is with what I'll call the ignorant-ignorant. These are the people who are so ignorant, they don't even recognize they are. The ones who open their mouths and spout out their wide-open yaps, usually revealing the current item being masticated and rotting teeth in the process, something that a half-cognizant dunce wouldn't dream of saying. Is that stereotyping? Probably.
Just precisely what ChromeScholar went through in his experience in the "Absolutely bizarre!" thread.
Oh well. I guess I'll just continue to avoid the wal-marts and other ignorant magnets.
Ignormagnets? HA!

Your ignorant-ignorants are what I just call stupid. There is a difference between being ignorant (not understanding something) and being stupid (intentionally refusing to understand or learn).

I agree. My AK gets very little use as anything other than something I wear around the house. It does look really good with a white dress shirt and tie, though, I do have to say.
