"Bang for the Buck" is a relative term to each one of us, but I would warn you about less expensive "off-the-rack" Montrose Doublets. The Montrose is the most fitted of kilt jackets and the only way to make sure you get it right is made-to-measure.
Also as much as I like my Montrose I never suggest it to someone if it will be their only formal jacket. First it is considered dressier than the PC, perfectly acceptable for white tie. Second because of the design it is a very warm jacket and not necessarily one you want to wear during warm weather.
That said, it really is a great jacket and always elicits great reviews.
