Ya, that's about when I started mine, or at least stopped shaving. It was... well grizzled, but that's not what looks good on me. Oh well. Every once in a while, I think about going crew cut too and donating my hair to the wigs for cancer thing. I could comb my hair with the beard trimmer then, LOL!, but it works just as well to not get haircuts and go long. Maybe one of these days I will when it's really really long.

But beards do go well with the kilt - no matter the length.

I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…

I'm thinking the same thing about the fur I've been growing since Thanksgiving. I've had facial hair of some sort for most of the last 25 years and only gave up the 'stache a couple years ago. I wore a goatee last winter and have a beard at the moment, but I'm NOT happy about the abundance of white and the various shades of gray.
I think I'll be clean shaven when I go to work on Monday, and when I wear my Prince Charlie outfit to a banquet next weekend.

The women I've known have never appreciated the beard. Until they ask me to shave; then all you hear is: "how long does it take to grow back?" haha

Ok, I can kind of get away with that "haven't shaven for a couple of days," kind of scuzzy... lumberjack shirt... type of look. The thing is I look about seven to ten years younger than i am, so I looked weird when I had a full stache.
So... I'll shave clean part of the time, then shave with the beard clippers on the shortist trim. I think that will look good with the solid canvas kilt/ plaid shirt look I've been working on. I can just stick with Buzz Kidder kilts and not worry about all this tartan hokus pokus.
Hmmm, maybe I'll get a blue aloha hawaii type shirt with just a touch of orange in the flowers. Looks good in my mind...

My first beard was in college in the late 60's. Yes rebelling against the MAN. I got my draft notice about two weeks before mid-term exams. For some reason my mind wasn't on school during the exams and grades went down. Beard went just before I joined the military education system.
After being discharged I worked for a few years before I realized that work might be easier with a college degree. Back to college and back to the beard. During the third year of college I got up and decided to shave. Who knows why. I decided to take out my contact lens and wear glasses at the same time. I walked around for about 3 or 4 days before anyone recognized me. The only reason they figured out who the new guy was is when I started talking.
Beard started back about a week later.

I admit, I've never had that said to me. Going from a beard that was mid-chest to none at all was a vast improvement. But usually she's happy it's gone...say I look quite a bit younger.
But when keeping the short whiskers of a beard, it doesn't seem to bother -- well, that might actually be a lie...

I just got off 2 weeks of leave and hadn't shaved the whole time. How I hated shaving this morn. But I am in agreance that I think I look better with a beard and a kilt than smooth faced and with a kilt.

I've had a beard of some sort since they kicked me out of the Marine Corps 26 years ago. First grew it as a sort of personal protest against that unexpected discharge.
Last time I shaved I didn't like what I saw. I used to have a sharply defined jaw, and that had become kind of smooth and saggy.
Yeah, I think a beard goes well with the Kilt. And also a shaved head; but that's probably just me.
