I just bought a 4-pocket waistcoat that was made for high waisted trousers and should work well with the kilt that I can put my watch, pen, and a couple other sundries in.
I think the sporran is a necessary part of a traditional style kilt, but I hate wearing them. They look great, but they always travel south and bunch up the kilt (I've still got a bit of a middle). I've looked at sporran suspenders, but I prefer the look of the belt. So I wear one when out and about and adjust it when needed, but when at home the sporran comes off.
