I was actually thinking more along the lines of getting a thrifty and trying it out on that first. That way, I'm only out $30, and not $80... if I screw it up.

This sounds like a job for Kiltstore.net's tartan color search! I tried grey/black and black/grey. If you exclude other colors there's a tractable number of matches, but most of them are woven-to-order types. Perhaps a retailer stocks some of them.
Off the shelf includes Black Isle (16 or 13 oz from Marton), or also some black-on-black weaves from Marton, House of Edgar which resemble SWK's shadow tartan. In poly-viscose, there is Marton's Grey Granite (I think it's called); but that may be lighter than what you're wanting. USAK uses it, but I don't know where to buy fabric (kiltstore.net? perhaps Celtic Croft could get it).

Marton Mills, of course. 
I've read where others have bought the cloth directly. So, if you like that it's worth looking into?
