James I almost felt your pain, though add about five years to the ages and we'd be about right. Though it seems to have slowed down the last few years and now it's more of a Jack Nicholson then your Sean Connery.
As for beards, we couldn't have any facial hair in high school and of course nothing in the army is allowed. Other then those times I've had facial hair of some kind. In my skinnier years I was more of a Circle Beard man with long sideburns, but in the last few years I've pretty much looked like this 24-7

Just for the record, I'm still mainly shaving with a beard trimmer on the closes possible setting. I did grow a short, full beard earlier this year, but trimmed it off.
When I need to, I shave with a regular razor, and it's all working out fine... Thankfully there are no beard pictures.
I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…

Yep, the beard compliments a kilt well (see avatar).

In one of these threads, and maybe even in this thread, we were talking about having a matching beard and goat hair sporran... Guess you could put little eyes on your sporran and have a full mask sporran of yourself...

That would be a little conceited, wouldn't it?

Of course, that's why we were talking about it... On the other hand, it might be frugal if you grow a beard twice as long as you want it, then chop the bottom half off to use on the sporran...

I shaved my beard last year after wearin it for one year. I've worn a moustache since I was about 18, but the beard has come and gone a couple of times.
The main problem with wearing a beard these days is that it is mostly white, and it makes my look like I'm about 65! Well, heck. I don't look too good on my best day (see above avatar), but there's no reason for me to look worse on purpose!
Even the Just For Men bears stuff got old, so I shaved it off.
Congrats to you fellows who wear a beard successfully. I'll stick with the coffee strainer.

I've got some pics of bears with grizzly beards up in the gallery and in my albums.
