Now that I'm a homeowner, I should do this ...
What's Scots Gaelic for "dog kennel"?

This has the makings of a good thread!

In Scotland and in Ireland rural homes, in particular, often already have names when you come into possession of them and, of course, you don't change that. When I lived in Kilkenny my home was called Cnoc Rory; my family home in Scotland is called Tulloch; my present home there has the strange name Tylehurst (I've no idea where that comes from, but that's what it has been for 150 years or so) and my home in Canada is Thistledown . I have family and friends in Scotland whose homes bear names such as Moy, East Dene, Dunmaglash, Milton-of-Moy, Dalmagary, Oldground, Priory Lodge, Newton, and on and on and on.

Maybe ask Slohairt? And while you are at it, would you mind asking him for a translation of "hen house" or "chicken coop" for me?

Teach Chearc Hen House, cearc is feminine so the 'c' is aspirated. The Scottish Gaelic form is identical to the Irish.
Cúb Eiteoige Chicken Coop. The Scottish Gaelic form is almost the same: Cùb Eiteoige.

Some addresses, especially in England are really, really long. Quaint as it is, it's a bit annoying to write on an envelope! I have some cousins who live there, and their addresses verge on something like this:

    Mr. Nigel Clive Smith-Smythe-Smith
    Wutheringhamtponshire House
    Lower Green Village Square
    Green-Village-Square-Upon-The-River
    Green Village
    East Anglia
    England
    United Kingdom

Damn, I forgot the aspiration! Ah well, I'm still learning.

Not quite the same thing, but when I was into Civil War reenacting, the shelter/dog tent I shared with another fellow was named "Sanssouci" after Frederick the Great's summer palace at Potsdam -- we actually found a reference to a Union soldier who named his tent with this name.

Civil War soldiers would frequently name their tents and cabins in winter quarters, complete with signs above the threshold.

    Regards,

    Todd

Thanks BP and Slohairt. I'm looking at restoring a former hen house in Inverness-shire and, since it is now known only as "the hen house", thought I could either keep that name or translate it to the Gaelic. Probably, in the end, it will stay as it is. Sort of appropriate for a falconer, isn't it .

The Wizard offered a couple of pics of his former guest house in Victoria on Vancouver Island. The following is my place, ThistleDown, on the BC mainland.

ThistleDown, are you looking to adopt? I'm a good cook, and Bob is handy to have around. . . That is just a lovely house!

One of my sisters and her husband moved into the Santa Ynez Valley (long known for Solvang and later, unfortunately, Michael Jackson's "NeverLand") as first-year teachers. They rented a small place with the mailing address "The Little Ranch House, 40 Acre Farm, Solvang CA" or something to that effect. Not sure if it's still there or if the wind has finally blown it down That would have been in late 1970s. . .

And another sister and her husband built in the Sierra foothills east of Chico CA, named their place Windridge although it has a street number and name for USPS. Was looking for a pic of their view over Central Valley, but best I can come up with is the flock of wild turkeys that wander through the front yard several times a day

The village of Carmel-by-the-Sea on the Monterey Peninsula in California has long had names instead of addresses. Many of the houses on Seventeen Mile Drive do as well.
