You might want to consider engraving spirals on the cantle, as they are often found on megalithic tombs in Ireland.

Early sporrans tended to have a tassel on each side, and one or two on the front. If you don't want to use the paws, you might want to consider brass balls with two or three rings cut round the circumference, and then nickle plated to tone in with the steel cantle.
