IMHO, if seals weren't "cute and cuddly" the whole issue would be ignored, much like the killing of cattle.
Consider the poor Newfoundland people. Euro fishing has depleted the cod, the main livelyhood for Nfld. for ages. Then the seal hunt is threatened. So, a lot of Newfoundlanders head to the mainland to find work, many end up in my home town of Toronto, and you end up with the threat of a severe beer shortage! <joking>
Seriously, I don't hear the nuts at PETA screaming about the Cod. Hard to warm up to a cod. Seals are cuddly. Despite the fact they smell like cod.
I'd proudly wear a well-made sealskin sporran.
