Being a ranger is a proud profession -- as much as I liked Yogi as a kid, I wish they would never created that series now.

You know, you and I do see things differently. It is not at all a matter of lack of respect- by any means- which is one of the reasons I want to go into the field. The thing is, I need to laugh. I am damned proud of my Scots heritage- which is one of the reasons I wear the kilt- but I will be the first to make a joke about sheep, whiskey and velcro gloves. If we can't laugh at ourselves... then we just laugh at other people, and that leads to prejudice and belittling. That's how I see it. I wouldn't make jokes about the forestry service if I weren't dead serious about it.

Okay, I can respect that line of thinking. First rounds on me should you make it to Missouri -- or I make it back to Colorado. int:
I'll PM you what Norman Maclean said the letters USFS stood for in his story "The Ranger, the Cook and the Hole in the Sky" about his time on a fire crew in the Bitteroots.

Where's that PM?!?! I may have to take you up on that drink some time. I do want to go to Missouri some day- other than passing through on my way to Ohio.

I'm almost afraid to ask what that is all about. Can it be explained on a child-friendly forum?

Let's just say that whiskey makes uglies look pretty, and velcro gloves stick to wool.

School Free Dress Day
Scooby had indicated he would wear his kilt to school on free dress day(they normally have a uniform). Today was the day, he didn't tell me when I asked and he missed it. He believes he can wear it for "Rainbow Day" tomorrow, also a free dress day of sorts. His class has a presentation tomorrow, we'll have to see what he decides.
If he kilts, I'll wear one too for the presentation; I'll have to change when I get to work. I work in a dirty(I get trousers filthy daily) and dangerous space. Unlike crboltz, I won't wear a kilt in the scene shop or warehouse; company policy against shorts AND personal choice.
I did have a facebook friend and customer ask me to let him know if I ever showed up kilted at work so he could come see.

Actually, I kilt on my non-scene shop days... I've worked at places that have a no shorts in the scene shop policy. I don't because they can't seem to get the air handling set correctly, (the building is improperly zoned) and they tend to sacrifice the scene shop. I ask my students to show up dressed in layers so they can adjust to whatever the temperature has to be that day.
Kilts are great but they cost to much to get messy.

I wish I had something funny or profound to put in a signature.

I have worn a kilt to run a show on two occasions, one fashion show and one benefit fundraiser. I have had positive reactions in both cases. That said, I still think carefully about the choice; it is not my job to distract focus from the "stage."

A few summers ago I was designing a show and at the last minute we lost a crew member. I was doing the show away from home, and the only black "Pant" like things I had was a kilt, and I said "OK I can do the show, but I'll be in a kilt" and they said "OK" and that was that!
