The Orkney Islands were under the control of Norway until 1468. They were pledged to James III of Scotland as part of a wedding dowry and were officially annexed by Scotland a couple of years later. All of the island names are of Norse origin.
There is an Orkney tartan. It was registered in 2000 as a fashion tartan. I rather like it.

And what does one do in the dead of winter, when the days are short?... You stay inside and make scotch.
