We all started somewhere in this kilted journey, wear what you have, you will be fine. Remember to have a good time, you know the best Burns dinners are the kind that Rabbie would have loved to attend himself.

Wise words there. Another option for you to consider would be a black, or, very dark blue pullover--the look can be very effective. Have fun.

I'd say anyone who woul even make a comment about wearing a kilt to a Burns Supper, doesn't actually understand what a Burns Supper is :P
We're having one down at the local pub this monday (I have seen no others, though didn't look THAT hard) and I fully intend to go kilted. Everyone I know expects me too as well :P

Yes around here Burns Supper is kiltie night, with everyone's utmost Highland finery on display. The one I played at last night was like that. Men not in kilts in suits or even tuxes. Women quite formally dressed.
But every year I also play at a Burns Supper which is an informal gathering in a restaurant/pub. Kilts are there, but people leave their Prince Charlies at home.

I was at Ceol Neamh Pipe Band's Burns dinner last night and I'm thinking not only is it accepted but expected that you wear highland attire. I wore a Murray ancient tartan with Black dress shirt, black tie and green hose. Many wore our band tartan but more had their own.
This was also my first Burns supper and had a great time. Go and embrace yourself in all things Scottish.
Slainte,
Mike

If you can't wear a kilt at a Burns Supper, where could you wear one?

I attended Burns Dinner at a location where none of the group I associate have attended in the past. I was concerned about how to dress. It was a kilt of course but casual, semi-formal, I did not know. As it turned out some were casual (good heavens even in jeans of all things) up to semi-formal. Less than half had on a kilt. I wore the same as last year when I attended at another location. In the future if the sponsor does not specify the type of dress then I shall feel free to make my own decision based on how fancy, or not, I think the event should be.
