When asked, "What do you wear under your kilt?" I reply, "Shoes and socks" and "the pride of Scotland." This cuts the conversation short and people clearly understand.

I want to make a comment, if you are going anywhere in a kilt that involves using a port-o-pot, underwear is a bad idea. making sure the kilt doesn't get tucked into the underwear while dodging the urinal and the confined space.

Might I also add to your comment, a Kilt, confined space, and 4yr old that has to go also don't work too well. I ended up losing a beauty of a kilt pin into the blasted thing while helping my son use the port-o-john

As to the original 'question'... I ain't wearing a kilt just so I can wear pants under it... I might as well just put my cargo shorts back on

I have 'reverted' to using the safty pin style of kilt pin, same on my sons kilt. He lost a picachu pin at Ikea, and it kinda bothered him a bit.

Tell me your thoughts and experience, that first time.
I was au natural, and other than a bit of fiddling about when sitting on hot bleachers, it went well. Considering that, in general, I only have at most two layers of clothing between my junk and the general public, it never occurred to me that I was naked under my kilt. I'm naked under my pants, too.

You've been kilted a few months more, since you posted this...how's it going?

Some older replies, but some worth a response...

It's nice to know that even "proper ladies" have our manly parts on their mind . Your anecdotes reminded me of a recent kilted haircut, with a very large, full length mirror in front of the chair, and my own trepidation as I sat in the chair, exposing what I thought might be potentially too much. I was looking with all the horror of child in the middle of the night who swears the closet door is slowly opening, whereas the girl about to cut my hair was looking with what I can only say was anticipation . No manly bits were shown...the kilt is too long, and the sporran too heavy. As a matter of fact, it looked a lot like a photo I remember seeing of you getting a tattoo, I think. No exposure...but more leg than the surf shorts we're used to seeing these days, and not something the average person is going to keep staring at, I think.

Glad you put it that way...I'd hate to think that my attempts at being a gentleman might preclude my intentionally offending people .

I feel proud then, to have dated a certain number of ladies in my time .

Definitely worth a response! I planted my cheeks on the couch a few times before I learned to get the kilt under my butt. Regimental is certainly something to practice at home, first...and as others have said, there are times when you probably oughtn't, for example if you choose to work out in a kilt...lat pulldowns preclude a pleat sweep. Yes, I tried it, and yes, I cleaned the seat when I was done. Under Armor, if I do it again, I think.

That too is a "practice at home first" item.

In my mind, it's perfectly acceptable, and just a tad sexy to know that my man has nothing but shoes beneath his kilt!!

Go for it if you want! It's worth a try at least once.
That is exactly what I like to hear! Also, it's an opinion shared by the girls I've come across. I suppose it just depends on the company one keeps.

    You got that right!
I will typically wear "wee trews" mainly because I usually have my kids with me and my 3yo daughter likes to hide under my kilt and pretend she is shy when introduced to new people.
No offense intended when I say this, but perhaps that's a behavior that oughtn't be encouraged!

The proper answer is so heavily dependent on context. At one point I was asked "what's under your kilt?" and my reply was "The Loch Ness Monster." The pride of Scotland...I gotta remember that one . A week ago, at a winery of all places, a group was discussing my kilt, and one of them finally just blurted out "are you wearing underwear?" to which I replied, "hell no!"

The response was cheers, winks, raised glasses, and grins. Had the questioners appeared to be a bunch of self-righteous pricks, I'd have told them the answer was between me and my kilt.

It's up to you what you want to wear. I find it's easier to deploy the landing gear when there's no clutter in the way, and a cool breeze is better than Gold Bond. Others may find modesty, self-consciousness, utility, or social pressures lead them to retain their underclothing. I can think of circumstances where I'd wear trunks...and since I imagine it would be quite uncomfortable, I am also going to guess that whichever you choose, the first time you try the other way around it's going to feel strange.

When I think back to when I was a kid going to Highland Games with my parents, I think I was usually wearing briefs, because I was self-conscious. I don't know if that changed until I began to wear a kilt again as an adult.
