If that be the case, then there is nothing wrong with wearing it with CSA uniform jacket.

So let's not get to bent about historical accuracy until we find out the gentleman's intentions.

If I gave the impression of "getting bent" about historical accuracy, then my apologies. As a member of the SUV for 15 years, I have seen such attire among our SCV brothers, and now among our own ranks, given our own "Federal Memorial Tartan".

Personally, I've never been much for mixing reenactment kit with my mufti, but that was mostly due to the fact that I wore the former on a regular basis as a living history ranger with NPS, and I didn't want to wear it on my lieu days.

    No harm, no foul Todd!

I didn't know there was a Federal Memorial Tartan (heading over to google)...

Actually, I'm with you on the mixing of kit, but that's a whole 'nother story (thread?)

Greetings from another proud SCV member & member of the MD Division Color Guard for the SCV. I often wear my Confederate Memorial tartan kilt in parades & ceremonies in Honor of our ancestors. We aren't reenacting but giving Honor to our ancestors & that was the idea behind the design of the Confederate Memorial tartan. Wear it how you see fit but just do one thing & wear it PROUDLY! As people have mentioned, it's lucky for modern kiltwearers that shell jackets were so popular during the Civil War because they go great with the kilt.

I would think that the good ol' Government Tartan (aka Black Watch) or any blue-green based tartan in Modern Colours would look great with a grey jacket. If the Confederate Memorial tartan is grey-based then there would be, for my "fashion eye", too much grey going on, especially if the shades of grey kilt v jacket clashed.

As being from a Union family in West Virginia, it's nice that I have a historically correct kilted option:

Years ago I picked up a large brass waistbelt buckle, rectangular, a cast thistle pattern, and engraved on the plain centre "Scotch Rifle Guards".

There were, I understand, a number of militia companies before, during, and after the war who adopted such titles and whose "Scotch" appearance didn't go further than such buckles.

Note that none of my posts contained anything political or specific to the matter of the Confederacy but concerned fashion and period dressing in a general sense.

I mentioned the visual issue of wearing a predominantly grey kilt with a grey jacket, a problem both when the shades of grey match and when they don't. It had nothing to do with the fact that it was a Confederate jacket or the Confederate tartan.

I mentioned the problem of mixing 20th century items with 1860s dress. This had nothing to do with the fact that the 1860s dress was Confederate.

(The only remotely political thing was me stating that my ancestors fought for the North.)

Back to the topic of keeping things period-correct in general, something just dawned on me, a trap or potential pitfall that hounds those who dabble in Highland Dress.

The American public in general has a vague notion of the dress of various periods. They know that powdered wigs and kneebreeches and buckled shoes go together as part of 1770s dress; they know that stovepipe hats and long frock coats and beards go together as part of 1860s dress.

It would look odd to just about anybody to have somebody dressed in full 1770s attire but wearing a beard and stovepipe hat.

But for some reason to the "general public" any and all items of Highland Dress somehow exist outside the boundries of time itself.

I think it's why we so often see people at Highland Games wearing the strangest mix of various periods, why we see so many modern Highland Dress articles worn with Renaissance clothing at Ren Faires, why we see these Civil War reenactors wearing 20th century Highland Dress items with their Civil War attire. I would hazard to guess that these same reenactors would never wear a non-Highland Dress 20th century article, such as tennis shoes or tie-dye t-shirt, with their Civil War dress.

I've been very ill since Friday, and missed this, so I'm sorry for the late reply.

I think that was really the problem early on. We weren't sure.

Please don't let the discussion that resulted keep you from participating here in the future.
