greenfordranger (I'd address you by name, except you seem more comfortable with the pseudonym),

Could you please enlarge this last one so we can better see the chip on your shoulder?

In all seriousness, you seem to be missing the point.

    Regards,

I wouldn't dream of picking apart that! It looks great.

But... it wouldn't be suitable for wear at a period Civil War event. My comments were ONLY directed at photos of people apparently attending Civil War events in a mix of Civil War period dress and modern Highland Dress.

My points were of two natures 1) "fashion" in the ordinary sense of choosing colours which coordinate and 2) the desire, when dressed in the dress of a certain period, to keep anachronisms at a minimum.

Obviously the Confederate Memorial Tartan itself, lovely though it is, is a complete anachronism in mid-19th century dress. It's why I would wear a tartan that 1) existed at that time and 2) coordinated with a grey shell jacket. Black Watch would be my choice! It would look great with a grey jacket.

    Spot on, Richard.

I think we need to remember that legitimate opposing viewpoints are not necessarily personal attacks. I've seen this before as a genealogical librarian when primary sources presented evidence that did not agree with family legend. People would blame the librarian and take it as a personal affront, but educators and librarians, while sympethic to personal beliefs, are obliged to present the facts.

Slackdrummer, my name is Adam. I usually only enter my name in a PM, no offense to anyone here but since you asked. That's not a chip on my shoulder, it's a MOUNTAIN Thanks Richard & I understand all points that were made I just don't agree w/them all. Cajunscot, I understand where you're coming from as well. You also have to remember the source for some of the things we read. Have you ever heard of re-construction? Thanks men as I've enjoyed this little debate as much as many Have a great weekend!

I teach course on American History and the Civil War at the local community college and one of the universities. I was also a NPS Ranger at a Civl War Battlefield for 10 years, so yes, I have heard of Reconstruction. Matter of fact, I discuss it every semester.

By the way, many historians today believe that the South may have lost the war, they "won" Reconstruction, as the "Redeemer" Democrats were able to drive the Carpetbagger & Scalawag state governments out of power. But we'll leave that for another forum...

Lemme check my list of stuff I try to avoid on here.... Yep, anything Confederate is #5 !

This thread has gotten more contentious than even the kilt hating bible guy thread! And just to think, a few days ago I was saying the forum had been a little dull !

This thread has increased my desire to get a Confederate Memorial kilt though...

Note that none of my posts contained anything political or specific to the matter of the Confederacy but concerned fashion and period dressing in a general sense.

I mentioned the visual issue of wearing a predominantly grey kilt with a grey jacket, a problem both when the shades of grey match and when they don't. It had nothing to do with the fact that it was a Confederate jacket or the Confederate tartan.

I mentioned the problem of mixing 20th century items with 1860s dress. This had nothing to do with the fact that the 1860s dress was Confederate.

(The only remotely political thing was me stating that my ancestors fought for the North.)

Back to the topic of keeping things period-correct in general, something just dawned on me, a trap or potential pitfall that hounds those who dabble in Highland Dress.

The American public in general has a vague notion of the dress of various periods. They know that powdered wigs and kneebreeches and buckled shoes go together as part of 1770s dress; they know that stovepipe hats and long frock coats and beards go together as part of 1860s dress.

It would look odd to just about anybody to have somebody dressed in full 1770s attire but wearing a beard and stovepipe hat.

But for some reason to the "general public" any and all items of Highland Dress somehow exist outside the boundries of time itself.

I think it's why we so often see people at Highland Games wearing the strangest mix of various periods, why we see so many modern Highland Dress articles worn with Renaissance clothing at Ren Faires, why we see these Civil War reenactors wearing 20th century Highland Dress items with their Civil War attire. I would hazard to guess that these same reenactors would never wear a non-Highland Dress 20th century article, such as tennis shoes or tie-dye t-shirt, with their Civil War dress.
