I'm in the peculiar situation where my wife LOVES the kilt... but only if I wear it a certain way. She's one of those who loves Utilikilts, and likes a traditional kilt when worn with boots and scrunched-down socks. But she's not a fan of the traditional look with full kilt hose or waistcoat or any of that.

So I get plenty of support and encouragement on kilt-wearing... as long as I wear it the way she likes. If I try to be too traditional, I get the eye roll. We sort of compromise, though: if I'm wearing a kilt out casually, I'll wear it the way she likes. But I will wear it more traditionally to Scottish-themed events like a Highland Games where others are wearing it that way too, and she can see that it's correct in that context.

I don't know how to break down the barrier and get her to appreciate the more traditional look. But as long as she likes kilts in general and wants me to wear them, I can live with it!
