I think the vest is pretty cool. Paired with a mandarin collar shirt and the right accessories, it will look great.
Are you dead set on those spats though??

Semi-Formal, outdoors, during the day? If I have that right, I believe you will need a coat and tie above the waist as non-kilt wearers would be doing so in strollers, lounge suits, though some may turn up in blazers and slacks. Waistcoat or vest is required with a stroller but optional with a lounge suit or blazer. In a kilt you will want a day wear jacket + matching or odd (solid color) waistcoat, and FIH tie. Definitely not a tweed jacket, and while I would prefer to see a jacket in dark gray or blue with plain buttons, an Argyle with matching black or odd grey vest is probably OK as they are readily available if not to my taste. But just a high collared vest?
Then again if the hosts has some alternate definition or vision for semi formal, who am I to say?

And we welcome a new expert to the forum!

Thirsty Viking lives in Texas, where "fall" is mostly a thing on the calender, rather than a distinct "season"! Unless you get lucky, the 'fall' weather might still be a little hot for ties and jackets etc... In my real world experience at weddings around here, outdoors or otherwise, you are pretty unlikely to see jackets or ties of any kind on the guests anyway.

I could not have said this better myself. I ran the outfit by the Bride and she loves it. In fact, in a twisted turn of events... She asked me to Officiate...

Points taken re: the climate and local custom, but spats? I personally don't care for the mixing of militaria and kilts in a civilian context, but wouldn't they be rather hot along with the hose tops for the conditions? Why not a pair of Bermuda knee socks ie tropical weight knee socks. The English Sports Store in Hamilton is the only purveyor left I know of since Trimmingham's closed. Available in a plethora of colors, and I'm sure they will ship to Texas.

I believe the spats are part of the OP's personal style. Not so much something up for debate, rather just part of what he enjoys wearing. (Much like the kilt itself for many of us...)

You know what...I really think you can pull it off. As you say, it is a very dear friend of yours and you know best how he/she would feel about your appearance. And from other threads (recently) we know you have a distinct personal style--and that's NOT code for something sly or underhanded. Like you say, the spats are ummm....non-negotiable.

I think the colors will compliment well with the Navy Edzell tartan. I'm not so sure about the shirt, it seems a bit fluffy to go under such a well-fitted (looking) vest.

In this case, I think it really is about how comfortable you will be in the vest.

I say go for it! But, then of course, POST PICTURES TOO!!!
