At the moment I'm looking to see if I could convert myself a black suit jacket into a non-silver-buttoned Argyll. I'd also be looking for a waistcoat. These would only set me back around £20-25 out of Primark.
If I wore this with a black bovine sporran with a mainly black (with chrome lining) cantle would this be too formal or just right?
I'd also look into getting antler buttons for the jacket... I'm only a pretty tiny budget due to peronal finances at the moment though!

here's a picture of what I'd wear if I was going with a black Argyll. I may change the black shirt to white:

    what do you guys think?
P.S. I need another hole punched in my sporran chain!

A white shirt would look nicer, I believe.

I have one somewhere... think it's in for washing. I also agree that it would look better.
Do you think the outfit is fine for a wedding though?

I can confirm that a couple of gents on the groom's side are hiring kilts for the occasion. I'm guessing they'll be wearing Argylls or Prince Charlies.

    OK
I'll try this again, for some reason my response did not post. To my mind the black shirt is a bit too severe, on top of that I find the entire ensemble is far too dark, it looks more like a funeral outfit rather than a wedding outfit. The sporran looks to be in the correct position to me. I would switch out the black shirt for a white one, and may consider a lighter pair of hose. It really is a shame that you sold off all your tweed it would be perfect for such an ocassion,as far as I can see.

    EDIT
I should say that a white shirt might brighten up the outfit enough, as those hose really are nice.

Ok McMurdo. I'll switch to a white shirt - but I'd prefer to wear either these hose or my diced green & white - which may stand out a bit too much.
Here's me wearing the diced hose with my dark green Prince Charlie:
(excuse the quality - phone 2MP camera!)

I wish I had a grey or black tweed jacket. Tomorrow I'm going hunting for a bargain in several charity shops - perhaps I could convert a standard tweed or I may find one of a different size that I may be able to re-make it or find some help getting it to fit me. On the off-chance one may fit me perfectly and be a nice colour!
Otherwise would the Argyll be fine?

I'd stick with the Argyll, and the white shirt with the argyll top hose from the first photo.

sorry for not making the point - I wasnt planning to wear the Prince Charlie. It's the only pic I have with my diced hose though so I just posted it to show them.
Do you think a grey sporran with cantle would look better?

I think the sporran you've got is fine and the first outfit will look much better with a white shirt.
