WW1 Cameron Highlanders Glengarry.....

Desperately seeking information as to the colour of tourie worn on the undiced glengarry of the Cameron highlanders. In ww1. (not pre or post)
Having presumed it to be red I have received information which, the informant tells me I need to corroborate as they are not sure, suggests that it may be dark blue.

anyone in a position to help further? Googling hasn't been any too fruitful.

All Scottish military glengarries have scarlet touries, the only possible exception being the Cameronians, their uniforms being almost entirely dark green and black. (I don't have a colour photograph of a Cameronians piper to hand.)

All ranks and positions of The Cameron Highlanders wore plain dark blue Glengarries with scarlet touries. Ditto The Black Watch (that is, until they dropped Glengarries and switched to Balmorals). No dicing.

Your first statement doesn't take into account the Scottish regiments in Commonwealth forces; for example, the First City Regiment of the South African Army wears a glengarry with blue and white dicing and a maroon tourie*, while the Toronto Scottish wears a blue-tan-white diced glengarry with a light blue tourie. The London Scottish (Now a company of the London Regiment) also have a blue tourie on their undiced glengarries.

*also worn on other ranks's ToS's; the colour commemorate's the First City's airborne role.

Glad you mentioned the old Cameronians (Scottish Rifles) they were pretty unique for Scottish Infantry, being the only Rifle regiment. Many moons ago (early 80's) I was an Air Cadet (Air Training Corps) and my squadron was based at Cameronian House in Hamilton. The regular battalion of Cameronians had been disbanded in 1968 (they were the County Regiment for Lanarkshire, and that role was superceded by 1st Bttn. King's Own Scottish Borderers, another unit with which I share family associations). However until the early 90's there were still Cameronian badged companies of the 52nd Lowland Volunteers. Their Glengarry was rifle green with black silk, grosgrain band, ribbons, cockade, and toorie. They also unlike the Royal Scots, KOSB, and RHF did not wear spats when in No.2 service dress. Officers wore both straps vertically on their Sam Browne's and their buttons, pips and crowns of rank were black metal.

You're most welcome! A number of years ago I read an account of the 2nd Scottish Rifles (The 2nd Battalion did not adopt the Cameronian name or customs at amalgamation) in WWI; I highly recommend it.
