You know, I'd never even heard of that film until I started dating Diane.
Apparently it was filmed at the University of Oregon so everyone there was absurdly proud of the film.
I enjoyed it, but I did have to suspend my 'British humour' to understand it.

Ah...British humor.
So how can the same nation that gave us Noel Coward, Oscar Wilde, Peter Cook and Dudley Moore, Flanders and Swann, and the Penny Dreadfuls also have given us Benny Hill and the "Carry On" films?
I suppose that Animal House so spoofed the conventional American image of college life in the sixties by showing it more like it probably really was and that was the gist of the humor of it. That and a good food fight...
Best

(...and I'm totally joking about the range of British funniness...I love it all!)

As much as I am a big fan of Babs, I could never quite find it in me to enjoy Benny Hill.
I've always been more of a 'footlights' fan.
It just took me a few months before I understood why certain things in American films were funny.
Diane still hates watching America's funniest home videos with me because the most I will do is smirk, but Family Guy will have me roaring with laughter.
I have to say, once Diane took a minute to explain things to me like 'American college in the 60's went like this...' I really, really enjoyed the film.
I guess humour really is such a social thing.
