Woodsheal, I really do like the shoes you found at Sportsmans's Guide. (For any of you guys who don't yet do Sportsman's Guide, do yourself a favor and go there right now.)

I would still add a kiltie--which you can buy off the shelf just about anywhere--just to dress up the brogue look for "dressier" daywear . . . kind of like the Farquharson had on in the photo of him.

As for the Doc Martins with 1" soles (or there abouts): I don't much care for the look. Too trendy or something. And when you already wear a 14, they tend to make your feet look like the proverbial gunboats. That's the only thing I don't like about the Hoggs brand shown: sole is just a little too thick.

A good sturdy pair of leather oxfords with kilties would look outstanding for hiking, daywear, etc.

And finally, I must agree that good money spent on good shoes is never wasted. A good pair will last a very long time, and a cheap pair will probably hurt your feet. Save up and buy the good ones. (I was only kidding about my expensive dress shoes not lasting. With resoling, I have put 25 years on a good pair of shoes.)

Just keep us posted on what you decide--with pictures!

I did end up ordering a pair, though I was torn. These are pretty darned sweet, too:
