Kilt Attire - Texas style
Hello all -
I'm new to this forum and need some advice. I'm from Texas USA which has many of us with Scottish heritage. I have a kilt and traditional clothing to wear at formal events. However, I would like to accent my kilt wear with a Texas or Western look in four ways: a cowboy type hat, a western leather vest, a 3 inch western black belt and buckle and cowboy boots. I would be wearing the traditional kilt, informal shirt and socks.
Has anyone else out there attempted to add a western flare to their kilt attire?

I've seen a few people wearing cowboy boots and a Stetson with their kilt at the Texas Scottish Games in Arlington. It didn't really look that odd compared to some of the others I see at the games. I've often thought about wearing a big rodeo buckle on my kilt belt but haven't done it yet.
Go for it. You'd be showing your Lone Star pride and your Scottish heritage at the same time.

I've seen people attempt this look at the Arlington games and at the San Antonio games, but never successfully, for any number of reasons.
Don't get me wrong. I'm proud of my Scottish roots, and am a gung-ho Texan (heck, Grandpa Baker was in the Army of the Republic), but I don't think the two looks work together. I'd pick one or the other.
And welcome to the forum from Houston!

Welcome, from Inverness-shire. I am a bit uneasy about mixing the two styles of dress, but your belt would certainly go with the kilt and with the weather that you chaps seem to have in Texas a wide brimmed hat is sensible. Its the cowboy boots that I am having trouble with. In truth it is your outfit and if you are happy with it, well, there is nothing else to say.

As a fellow Texan, (albeit one displaced to the pacific northwest) I agree with Jock. No problem with the belt, vest, or Hat, but the boots would not look good IMHO. Plenty of ways to Texan up a kilt without the boots.

Howdy from the Houston area!
I've seen western style leather vests worked into casual kilt outfits fairly often down here, and western belts and buckles as well, but not as often. I didn't think that look was too far out, so I'd say why not give them a try. On the other hand, I've seen some kilt and cowboy boot combos as well, but I aways thought that looked more like a attempt at humor than a legit fashion choice.

What you need is a traditional pair of faded, broken in blue jeans.
I'm guessing that would be Wranglers...
Wonder how a kilt in denim or denim-like material might work out...

That could be an interesting idea, worth of trying. Otherwise and with the Jock.

I saw a fellow at the last Highland Games in San Antonio dressed as you describe, and I thought it looked pretty good. He had on a black felt hat, crisp white shirt, traditional kilt, and boots. I was fairly surprised to see that it worked as well as it did, although I probably couldn't pull it off.
I'd say the western style tooling on the belt would be the easiest to incorporate into the kilted outfit.

Thanks y'all for your encouraging comments. I do love my black Lucchese Classic, full quill ostrich ropers. I think I'll give the "look" a try.
My wife and I recently returned from a wonderful vacation in Scotland where we were lucky enough to attend the 2010 International Bagpipe Competition in Glasgow and the Military Tattoo in Edinburgh. We saw many young men dressed in casual kilt attire wearing what appeared to be yellow/tan construction boots. To me, those types of boots with a kilt look terrible. So….I truly believe my ropers will look nice with my kilt
