Shoes
These shoes are perfect for wearing with the kilt. In fact my Clan Chief wears them all of the time during the day. See the attached pic of me with him about 7 years ago, although the shoes are not terribly clear.

For my current financial situation, the price is a bit much. In the distant past I have worn hand-made, custom fitted (a cast was made of my feet, then the last was carved using the casts as a pattern) by a Mexican bootmaker. They were wonderful! I haven't had a pair of shoes fit properly since he died some 40+ years ago. If you can afford the tarrif, then I say, go for it. They would look great with a kilt!

Woodsheal, I really do like the shoes you found at Sportsmans's Guide. (For any of you guys who don't yet do Sportsman's Guide, do yourself a favor and go there right now.)
I would still add a kiltie--which you can buy off the shelf just about anywhere--just to dress up the brogue look for "dressier" daywear . . . kind of like the Farquharson had on in the photo of him.
As for the Doc Martins with 1" soles (or there abouts): I don't much care for the look. Too trendy or something. And when you already wear a 14, they tend to make your feet look like the proverbial gunboats. That's the only thing I don't like about the Hoggs brand shown: sole is just a little too thick.
A good sturdy pair of leather oxfords with kilties would look outstanding for hiking, daywear, etc.
And finally, I must agree that good money spent on good shoes is never wasted. A good pair will last a very long time, and a cheap pair will probably hurt your feet. Save up and buy the good ones. (I was only kidding about my expensive dress shoes not lasting. With resoling, I have put 25 years on a good pair of shoes.)
Just keep us posted on what you decide--with pictures!

For that price, they had better walk the hills for me!

Here's a classic example of this style of shoe being worn 'On the hill'. I've wanted a pair for a long time now and nearly bought a pair of golfing shoes from a 'thrift' shop, but I wondered if I would be able to remove the spikes. As has been pointed out already golf (or Gowf) was invented in Scotland, so it's not suprising that this style of shoe is traditional for this sport.
The Kilt is my delight !

I did end up ordering a pair, though I was torn. These are pretty darned sweet, too:
